Injury Fatal to Amish Bishop

JACOB D. BONTRAGER OF GOSHEN, IND. STRUCK BY FALLING LIMB

Goshen, Ind. — Funeral services for Bishop Jacob D. Bontrager, 63, took place in the Amish community east of Goshen on Feb. 8 and were widely attended. Elam Hostetler, Milo Yoder and Ira Johns conducted the services.

Bishop Bontrager died at the Memorial hospital, South Bend, on Feb. 5 after undergoing brain surgery for an injury suffered in an accident at his farm six days earlier. He and his son, Elam, were felling a tree when a dead limb came down and struck him on the shoulder and head. The shoulder was placed in a cast, but he continued to complain of the head injury and lapsed into unconsciousness the morning of his death.

Bro. Bontrager was born in Middlebury township on Dec. 18, 1887. He was a lifelong resident here, and was well and favorably known in the church and community.

The survivors include his wife, the former Fannie Schrock, four daughters and six sons.
