Retired Evangelical Conf. Pastor Dies

Archbold, Ohio. — Rev. H. E. Bertsche, 74, well-known retired pastor of the Evangelical Mennonite Conference, died June 14 at Detwiler Hospital in Wauseon after a long illness.

Funeral services were conducted in the Archbold Evangelical Mennonite Church at 2:30 p.m. June 17, with Rev. Charles L. Zimmerman, Rev. E. G. Steiner and Rev. Donald Roth officiating. Burial was made at the EMC Cemetery at Bluffton.

A native of Gridley, Ill., Rev. Bertsche was pastor of the E .B. Church there for 15 years and of the Archbold E.M. Church for 16 years before his retirement. He also served as interim pastor of the Wauseon church and co-pastor of the West Unity, O. church. He served on the Congo Inland Mission Board and in places of leadership in the EMC Conference, including the office of president and editor of the conference periodical.

Survivors include his widow, the former Emma Steiner; one daughter, Mrs. Frank Hainline of Los Angeles; two sons, Dr. James Bertsche, a missionary to the Congo, and Evan of Archbold.
