Charter Member Of Reedley Church Died

Reedley, Calif. — Funeral services for Mrs. Katie Bergthold, 78, were held recently at the First Mennonite Church here of which she was a charter member.

Mrs. Bergthold was born in Russia. She and her husband came to Reedley from Minnesota in 1904. Mr. Bergthold died about 15 years ago, and since then Mrs. Bergthold had lived at Fresco.

Surviving are two children, Oscar of Reedley and Mrs. Elsie Hall of Fresno; a sister, Mrs. Amelia Rupp of Minnesota; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

MRS. KATIE BERGTHOLD

Mrs. Katie Bergthold of Fresno, Calif., daughter of Philipp and Magdalene Kintzi Gergthold [sic Bergthold], was born at Einsiedel, Gallicia [sic Galicia], Austria, on June 30, 1878. She departed this life Oct. 17,1956, to be forever with her blessed Lord and Saviour. She attained the age of 78 years.

She came to this country with her parents at the age of three and settled in Pennsylvania. From there they moved to Butterfield, Minn.

She accepted Christ as her Saviour in early youth, was baptized at the age of 14 by Rev. Henry Kintzi and received as a member in the First Mennonite church of Butterfield.

On Nov. 11,1900, she entered holy wedlock with Gustav Bergthold through the ministry of Rev. N. F. Toews. to this home were born two children, Oscar and Elsie. this family circle was broken when her husband passed away Oct. 25, 1941.

In 1904, the family moved to Reedley, Calif., where they became charter members of the First Mennonite Church. She was faithful to her Lord and read His Word regularly. her favorite portion of Scripture was the 23rd Psalm.

She loved children and enjoyed working with flowers.

She leaves to mourn her departure her children, Oscar and wife Sara of Reedley, Elsie and her husband O. T. Hall of Fresno; one sister Mrs. Amelia Rupp of Butterfield, Minn.; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at the First Mennonite Church of Reedley in charge of her pastor, Rev. Aaron J. Epp. A trio comprised of Mrs. Alvin Friesen, Mrs. Paul Roth, and Mrs. Aaron J. Epp sang three selections. Mrs. Arthur Krehbiel was organist. Interment was made in the Reedley cemetery.
