LEWIS BENDER

Lewis Bender, 69, life-long resident of the Kalona, Iowa community, died Wednesday evening, June 29, 1960 at the Washington, Iowa hospital, where he had been a patient for two weeks. Mr. Bender had been ill for five months as a victim of cancer.

Born Jan. 23, 1891 near Wellman, he was the son of William C. and Rebecca Kauffman Bender. After his marriage Sept. 5, 1916 to Barbara Miller, they farmed near Kalona. Their farm home was located three miles north of town.

Survivors include his widow; four daughters, Mrs. Vernon Bontrager, Mrs. Robert Fisher and Miss Vera Bender, all of Kalona, and Mrs. Lloyd Miller of Glendale, Arizona; three sons, Clarence of Kalona, Paul of Springs, Pa., and Daniel of Iowa City. There are also 19 grandchildren; two brothers, Harvey of Kalona and Leroy of Parnell; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Sinclair of Exeland, Wis. and Mrs. James Cotsones of Denver, Colo.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning, July 2, at the East Union Mennonite Church, with A. Lloyd Swartzendruber and John J. Miller in charge. Burial was made in the East Union cemetery. s
