JOHN EDWARD BAWEL

John Edward Bawel, son of Henry and Cathern (Calpetzer) Bawel, was born at Belleville, Pa. Sept. 4, 1869; died after an extended illness at his home near Oxford, Iowa Jan. 18, 1960 at the age of 90 years, three months and 14 days.

He was united in marriage to Katie Gascho of Milford, Nebr. on February 27, 1902 by Bishop Joseph Schlegel. His wife preceded him in death Feb. 26, 1929. Also preceding him were two daughters, five brothers and four sisters.

Surviving are six children, one son Henry at home; five daughters, Emma at home, Nellie of Iowa City, Velma (Mrs. Perry Beckler) of Tiffin, Iowa, Viola (Mrs. Harold Burkholder) of Parnell, Iowa, and Bessie (Mrs. Maynard Widmer) of Wayland, Iowa; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was a lifetime farmer, living in the communities of Milford and Wood River, Neb. until 1940 when he with his family moved to the farm near Oxford, Iowa. He was a member of the East Fairview church until they moved to Wood River, where he fellowshipped with the believers there for 31 years. After moving to Oxford he placed his membership with the Wellman Mennonite church where he was a member at the time of his death.

Services were held at the Wellman Mennonite church Jan. 21, 1960 in charge of Max Yoder and Geo. S. Miller. Burial was made in the church cemetery.
