ABE BAUMGARTNER

Abe Baumgartner, 79, of Upland, Calif. died at his home Saturday, Aug. 18, after a lengthy illness.

A native of Bluffton, Ohio, Mr. Baumgartner had lived in Upland only nine days, moving here from Aberdeen, Idaho to be hear his relatvies [sic]. He was a retired farmer.

He was the son of Christian and Elizabeth Baumgartner. He was married to Elizabeth Habegger, who preceded him in death in 1916, leaving him with three small children. In his second marriage he was united with Miss Mary Schirmer, who for 36 years was a missionary in the Hope Indians in Arizona. She brought two adopted Indian children from the Mission into the home and they reared them as their own. Mary Martha is still with them and Paul is in the Marine Corps. His children are Mrs. Melvina Van Nest of Los Angeles, Cal., Mrs. Gladyne Becker of Wellington, Kan., and Irvin of rural Columbus Grove, Ohio.

Other survivors are three sisters, Mrs. Fannie Chapman, Mrs. Isaac Habegger and Mrs. Dan Dettweiler, and one brother, John Baumgartner, all of Upland.

In the absence of the pastor, Rev. Paul Goering, funeral services were conducted by Rev. M. A. Niswander in the First Mennonite Church of Upland. Interment was made in Bellvue cemetery.
