Susan S. Unruh-Bartel

Susan S. Unruh Bartel was born on October 17, 1876, in Dakota, her parents being Benjamin and Eva Nickel Unruh. She was reared in the Gnadenberg community in Harvey county, Kansas, where she also received her meager education. In 1898 she took catechetical instructions and was baptized by Rev. Jacob Toevs and taken up as member into the First Mennonite church of Newton, Kansas. On October 12, 1899, she was united in marriage to G. A. Bartel of Hillsboro, Kansas, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Jacob W. Penner. Out of this marriage four children were born: John who died in his infancy; Dorn, Arthur and Linda.

In 1906 an irrigation project was opened up at Aberdeen, Idaho, where the family moved to and arrived on February 12. There her husband engaged in canal building and farming until 1913, when he purchased an interest in the Aberdeen Hardware and Furniture Company.

In 1915 her health gradually began to fall until in 1928 her condition was so that it was found advisable to take her to a sanitarium in Goessel, Kansas, where she remained until death called her to her final rest on August 11, 1934. She has reached the age of 57 years, 7 months and 25 days.

Mrs. Bartel died in the absence of her immediate family. Under these circumstances, relatives and friends with the hospital force have assisted in the care of our mother in a very satisfactory way, and made all necessary arrangements.

We wish to express our deepest appreciation to all for their kindness, and for the beautiful floral contributions.

G. A. Bartel, Linda G. Bartel, Arthur and Mabel Bartel, Dorn and Marvin D. Linscheid.
