● A number of relatives from this area attended funeral services for Leonhard Bartel, 56, of Marion, S.D., held June 5 at the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church near Freeman. Rev. Virgil Gerig, the pastor, officiated. Mr. Bartel died June 3 at the Freeman Hospital after undergoing surgery. He was a son of the late Peter and Anna Bartel of the Goessel community. In 1948 he married Delsie Thieszen of Marion, and since then they had operated a hotel and café in Marion. Surviving in addition to his widow are two sons, Keith and Gerald, and a daughter, Cathryn, all at home; and nine brothers and sisters, most of whom live in this area.
