MRS. KATHRINA BARTEL

Our mother, Kathrina Bartel (nee Buller), was born May 21, 1868, in Heinrichsfeld, South Russia. In this village she spent her younger years and attended school. In 1884 she came to America with her parents and settled at Marion, S.D.

In 1887 she received her catechism instruction, was baptized by the late Rev. Aron Wall and received into the Mennonite Church, better known as the Tiessen Church.

On Dec. 4, 1888, she was united in marriage to Heinrich Bartel. They came to Mountain Lake, Minn. and joined the First Mennonite Church and remained faithful members. To this marriage four children were born. Sarah, David who died in infancy, Henry and Leonard, all living at Mountain Lake. Mother and father shared joy and sorrow for 32 years. Mother was a widow for 35 years.

Her health had been failing for the last eight years. During the past year her condition became more serious. Even so she was able to be up and around in able to be up and around [sic duplicated in original] in her home. She was bedfast only the last two days. She passed away peacefully on Jan. 3, 1957, at 8:30 a.m. attaining the age of 88 years, seven months, and 12 days. Her illness was diagnosed as cancer.

She leaves to mourn he [sic] departure Sarah, two sons, Henry and Leonard, two dauhgters-in-law [sic], five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one brother, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. Our father Heinrich, one son David, and one grandson Richard James preceded her in death.

She has passed to her well deserved rest. We do not mourn without hope, for we shall meet again. — The Children.
