Accidents Claim Two Lives at Steinbach

Steinbach, Man. — A 56-year-old father and grandfather and an 18-year-old youth were killed in unusual accidents here within four days' time.

Jacob R. E. Barkman, boiler plant operator at the C. T. Loewen sash and door factory, was suffocated in the large sawdust and shavings bin on Sept. 17. It is believed he had gone into the upper part of the bin to force more of the material into a chute when the sawdust gave way and buried him.

(An almost identical accident at Archbold, Ohio this month claimed the life of John W. Crossgrove, farmer there.)

Four days earlier, young Peter Klassen unwittingly backed a feed truck against a power line while delivering feed to a trench silo near here. As he stepped from the truck, he received a fatal electrical charge.

Both funerals were held at the Evangelical Mennonite Church.
