KATHERINE WIELAND BAHR

Katherine Wieland Bahr was born in Wuertemberg, Germany, July 9, 1856. She departed this life September 24, 1945, at Halstead, Kansas, reaching the age of 89 years, two months and fifteen days. Mother Bahr grew to womanhood in her native land of Germany, where she was a member of the Lutheran church. As a young woman she came to America, making her home in Illinois.

On August 4, 1883, she was united in marriage to Christian Bahr at Danville, Illinois. To this union seven children were born. One girl passed to her heavenly home in infancy. She leaves to mourn her death, three sons and three daughters. They are: Henry of Halstead: Lena (Mrs. W. F.) Dettweiler of Uuland [sic Upland], California; Ida (Mrs. Emil) Johnson of Newton; Amelia (Mrs. W. H.) Mierau of Wichita,; Lucas Bahr of Newton and John of Hutchinson; also ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Four of her grandsons and one grand-daughter have been in the country's service for the past four years. One grandson, Wm. C. Mierau, is at this time with the armed forces near the place of her birth in Germany.

After coming to America, Mother Bahr made her home in Illinois until with her husband and family on September 20, 1889, fifty-six years ago, she came to Halstead, Kansas. She lived here until in March, 1941, when due to failing strength and advance age she moved to the Bethel Home for the Aged in Newton, Kansas. Here she enjoyed good health, was able to walk up and down stairs unassisted, until on September 12, she had the misfortune of falling and fracturing her hip. The fall possibly was due to a stroke. She was removed to the Halstead Hospital where she quietly and peacefully passed away at three o'clock, Monday afternoon, September 24.

After coming to Kansas, she joined the First Mennonite church of Halstead of which she remained a faithful member till the time of her death. After the death of her husband in 1926, she made her home with her son Henry until the time she moved to Newton in 1941.

We mourn but we mourn as Christians.

Peace be with you;
     Sleep Thy last Sleep.
Rest where none weep,
     In that home beyond where there is no toil, no suffering, no sorrow,
Until the Eternal Morrow.
     Rest, oh, rest in peace.

Funeral services were held in the First Mennonite church of Halstead on Thursday afternoon, September 27, 1945, at 2:30 o'clock, with Rev. David C. Wedel in charge. A quartet composed of Mrs. Harvey Vogt, Mrs. Ralph Ewy, Harvey Vogt and Menno Thiessen sang, "Near To the Heart of God" and "Jesus, Lover of My Soul." Ruth Rose was the pianist. Casket bearers were Carl Dettweiler, Paul Schroeder, Oscar Erdman, Henry Penner, John Will and Henry Will. Her body was laid to rest by the side of her husband in the Halstead cemetery. Kaufman and Dreese were in charge of the funeral arrangements.
