Retired Professor Of German Dies

Hillsboro, Kan. — Relatives here received word of the death of Dr. Gerhard Baerg, retired professor of German, which occurred Dec. 28 in Topeka, Kan. at the age of 83.

A native of this community, Dr. Baerg attended Tabor College where he received a teacher's certificate in 1912. After teaching one year at Lehigh, he attended the university of Kansas and earned the B.A. degree. He received his master's and doctor's degrees from Cornell University.

Dr. Baerg taught at Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn., from 1920 to 1931, and from 1931 until his retirement in 1954 he was chairman of the German Department at DePauw university, Greencastle, Ind. He was also a visiting professor at the Sorbonne in Paris and at the University of Goettingen in Germany, and served two terms as president of the American Assn. of Teachers of German.
