Joanna S. Andres, 94, retired teacher, writer and volunteer worker, died Tuesday (March 31, 1998) at Schowalter Villa in Hesston. She was born December 6, 1903, in South Russia to Jasha Sudermann and Amy Greaves Sudermann. She married Herman J. Andres August 16, 1931, in Goshen, Indiana. He preceded her in death October 12, 1992. She was a member of the First Mennonite Church in Newton and was a longtime volunteer at Bethel Deaconess Hospital and also Prairie View Hospital. Her father died when she was young, and her mother later married Gustav H. Enns. The family moved to Berlin in 1912, and was living there during World War I. She and her family stayed for a time with maternal relatives in Sheffield, England, and from there went to live with relatives in Beatrice, Neb., in the fall of 1914. She completed and associate of business degree at Goshen College and took seminary training for a THB degree. She later received a bachelor of science degree in education. She enjoyed teaching elementary school and education in church. She volunteered for various needs and edited various publications through the years. Other survivors include: one son, James H. Andres of Rosthern, Saskatchewan, Canada; one daughter Amy E, Reed o Broomfield, Colo.; five sisters, Amy Preckshot of Columbia, Mo., Haidie Stover of Souderton, Pa., Ruth Blocksma of Jacksonville, Fla., Vera Kemp of Sun City West, Ariz., and Frieda Enss of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Schowalter Villa Chapel in Hesston with Chaplain Mary Dyck officiating and at 2 p.m. Monday at First Mennonite Church in Newton with Revs. Verney Unruh and Rusty Bonham and Chaplain Mary Dyck officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. The Newton Kansan, April 2, 1998.
