Father, Son Drown In New York River

Croghan, New York. — Leo R. Zehr, 49, a farmer and his nine-year-old son, Harlan, drowned July 27 in a river a mile from their home while fishing.

Harlan had gone to get a pail of water when he slipped off a rock and fell into the water. In an effort to rescue his son, Mr. Zehr jumped into the swiftly moving river. A short time later both went under water and did not come up. Marvin, 11-year-old son who remained on shore, ran for help. Both bodies were found about ten feet from shore.

Funeral services for Mr. Zehr and his son were held July 31 at the Conservative Mennonite Church in Croghan.

Immediate survivors of Mr. Zehr are his parents, Andrew and Mollie Zehr, four daughters, Carolyn, Lorraine, Delores, and Geraldine, and a son Marvin, all at home.

Mr. Zehr's wife, Irene Moser Zehr, died Aug. 27, 1961 at the age of 37.
