GOSHEN PROFESSOR DIES UNEXPECTEDLY

Goshen. Ind. — Dr. Samuel A. Yoder, veteran member of the Goshen College faculty, died unexpectedly Sunday, July 26, after becoming ill while teaching Sunday school. He was 64.

Dr. Yoder passed away about 12:30 p.m. at the Goshen Hospital, where he had been taken by ambulance from the Goshen College Mennonite Church. He suffered a stroke some five years ago, but had remained active in college teaching since then.

A native of Elkhart County and a graduate of Goshen College, he received the Ph.D. degree from Indiana University in 1937. After teaching English at Goshen College in the early 1930s, Yoder taught for several years at Wheaton (Ill.) College, then returned to Goshen, where he served as head of the English department for many years. On two occasions recently he was leader of Study-Service groups in Jamaica.

During World War II he served with MCC in the Middle East and later helped open Mennonite relief and mission work in Ethiopia. On a sabbatical about six years ago, he was a Fulbright lecturer in Vietnam and Taiwan.

Survivors include his widow, the former Ethel Oyer, two daughters, two brothers, Dr. Paton Yoder, dean of Hesston College, and Dr. Jonathan Yoder, missionary In India and Nepal; two sisters, Rhea Yoder and Mrs. Ruth Kortemeyer.
