Mother, Daughter Drown When Auto is Hurled into Creek

Goshen, Ind. — A tragic accident south of Elkhart the afternoon of Dec. 11 claimed the lives of Mrs. Marilyn K. Yoder, 28, and her two-year-old daughter, Dawn, of rural Elkhart.

Mrs. Yoder had stopped her sports car at a roadside mailbox when it was struck from the rear by a speeding auto that went out of control on a curve. Both vehicles then plunged down a steep bank into nearby Baugo Creek.

Later examinations showed that Mrs. Yoder and her daughter both died of drowning rather than of injuries from the crash. The driver of the other car, a 21-year-old rural Osceola man, was injured but was able to get out of his partially submerged car and wade to the bank.

Mrs. Yoder is survived by her husband, Leroy (Butch) Yoder; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willis Schmucker of Sarasota, Fla.; and grandparents, Mrs. Mary Miller of Sarasota and Mrs. Berniece Schooley of Elkhart. Her daughter also leaves grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Yoder of Elkhart, and a great-grandfather, Joseph Yoder of Fairview, Mich.

Funeral services were held Dec. 13 at the First Baptist Church of Elkhart.
