Young Farmer Dies Of Gas Poisoning In Storage Bin
Montezuma, Kan. — A farm accident in the Beachy Amish Mennonite settlement here claimed the life of Melvin Yoder, 29-year-old farmer.
Mr. Yoder went to the bottom of a nearly empty grain storage silo, after having placed a large fan on top to force fresh air inside. However, it is believed he was overcome by carbon monoxide gas. When he failed to return to the house at the usual time his wife summoned a brother, Floyd Yoder, who found him inside the silo. A rescue squad was called and administered oxygen and artificial respiration, but to no avail.
Survivors include the widow, the former Viola Yoder, and five small children, all of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Enos W. Yoder of Montezuma; four brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services were held at the Amish Mennonite church on Feb. 2.
