LIFELONG RESIDENT OF SOUTHEASTERN IOWA DIES AT WELLMAN

Wellman, Iowa. — Funeral services for Mahlon E. Yoder, 81, a lifelong resident of the Wellman and Kalona communities, were held April 3 at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church. He died here April 1 after a long illness.

Mr. Yoder was born Sept. 5, 1876, and his marriage to Anna Hershberger occurred nearly 60 years ago. He had been a member of the Lower Deer Creek [sentence incomplete in original]

MAHLON E. YODER

Mahlon E. Yoder, son of Eli and Anna (Wertz) Yoder, was born in Johnson County, Iowa, on Sept. 5, 1876, and died at his home in Wellman, Iowa April 1, 1958, at the age of 81 years, six months, 26 days.

In 1894 he was baptized in a class of 22 by Bishop Christian Werye and became a member of the Mennonite Church in which faith he lived his entire life.

On Sept. 18, 1898, he was married to Anna Hershberger, by Bishop J. f. Swartzendruber, and to this union nine children were born. The surviving children are Ray A. and Cora (Mrs. Lloyd Brenneman) of Kalona, Ia., Mary (Mrs. John F. Shelter), Martha (Mrs. Ezra Troyer), Leona (Mrs. Chester P. Miller) and Albert of Wellman, Iowa, Kathryn (Mrs. Lawrence P. Miller) of Colorado Spring [sic Springs], Colo., and Edith at home. One daughter, Gertrude (Mrs. Ora Brenneman) preceded him in death in 1942.

Besides his wife and companion and the eight children he leaves to mourn his passing 26 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, five brothers, Charley, Lewis, Melvin, Willard and Urie, and one sister Lena (Mrs. Elmer Bontrager), and also many other acquaintances and friends.

The family lived on two different farms near Joetown until 1936, when they moved to Wellman.

Until about five years ago Mahlon usually enjoyed good health but since that time his lot was one of considerable illness and suffering. During these yeas the children administered the best of care, and the family given special recognition to the faithful services of Edith who, in recent months since the illness of her mother, has carried the added responsibilities of the home. However, it still became necessary to engage the services of a registered nurse during the last four weeks of his life.

Thus we are reminded again that the sufferings of life are, for the children of God, oftimes relieved only in death.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 3, at 2:00 p. m. at the Lower Deer Creek Church. A service at the home was conducted by Eli Yutzy. those in charge at the church were john Y. Swartzendruber and Robert Yoder. Burial was made in the church cemetery.
