JOHN B. YODER

John B. Yoder, youngest child of Solomon and Sarah (King) Yoder, was born in Logan county, Ohio, Sept. 5, 1864, and passed away at his home near Garden City, Mo. August 13, 1951, at the age of 86 years, 11 months and eight days. He had been in failing health for several months and bedfast for nearly six weeks.

He was the last of a family of five children. He came to Missouri with his parents when about a year old, where he spent the remainder of his life.

On Dec. 31, 1899, he was united in marriage to Mary E. Kenagy of Topeka, Ind. To this union were born four children: Forrest G. of Eureka, Ill., Frances E. (wife of Dr. E. J. Miller) and Lela F. both of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Walter L. of Garden City, Mo.

On Dec. 31, 1949, Mr. and Mrs. Yoder celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with all the children and grandchildren present and with open house to all relatives and friends.

He accepted Christ as his Savior and united with the Mennonite church when a young man and remained a faithful member until death. His place at church was never vacant whenever health permitted him to attend and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was ordained deacon of the Bethel congregation in 1910 and served faithfully in many other phases of church work as long as health permitted.

He is survived by his faithful companion, four children, eight grandchildren, seven nieces and nephews besides many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by one infant grandson.

He always had a deep concern for the spiritual welfare of his family. He was patient through all his suffering and often expressed the desire to be relieved of his suffering and be at rest if it was the Lord’s will.

The funeral was held at 2:00 o’clock Thursday afternoon, Aug 16, at the Sycamore Grove Mennonite church. Services were in charge of Rev. W. R. Hershberger, assisted by Rev. J. C. Driver of La Junta, Colo., Rev. S. S. Hershberger, Rev. W. E. Helmuth and Rev. Walter Davenport. The song: "My Latest Sun,” “Heaven is My Home,” and “If We Never Meet Again,” were rendered by Louis Yoder, Carrie Schrock, Berniece Yoder, Phoebe Hershberger, Harold Hershberger, Rolla Hartzler, Wilbur Schrock, and Ira Zook.

Casket bearers were Lawrence Schrock, Milo Yoder, Carroll Helmuth, Harold Yoder, Floyd Schrock and Elby R. Yoder.

Those from a distance who attended the services were Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Yoder and family and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Zook, all of Eureka, Ill., Dr. and Mrs. E. J. Miller and family of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Miss Lela Yoder, also of Twin Falls, Idaho, who had been at the bedside of her father for the past five weeks, assisting in his care.
