Amish Bishop Killed, Three Hurt in Wisconsin Crash
Tomah, Wis. — A highway crash near here the evening of Dec. 16 claimed the life of an Amish bishop from Curtiss, Wis. and seriously injured his wife, son and grandson.
Bishop Israel J. Yoder died at Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse on Dec. 19, three days after the accident. He had suffered a broken back with injury to the spinal cord. The body was returned to Curtiss, where the funeral was held on Dec. 22.
Mrs. Israel Yoder sustained internal injuries and underwent surgery for removal of her spleen. Her son, John I. Yoder of this community, has a back fracture and John’s six-year-old son Samuel had both legs broken between the knees and ankles. All were taken to the hospital in LaCrosse.
John Yoder and son had gone to Tomah by horse and buggy to meet the parents, who had come here by bus for a visit. On the way home the buggy was hit from the rear by a car driven by a 17-year-old youth.
