Accidents Claim Two Lives

Goshen, Ind. — A traffic accident on a county road and an accidental electrocution claimed two lives near here on successive days.

Four-year-old Steven R. Schmucker was instantly killed in the Amish settlement east of here May 3 when struck by a car on a county road. He was walking with his father, Vernon R. Schmucker, 35, behind a team of horses and a harrow when a car came over a small hill and struck them from the rear. Mr. Schmucker sustained a fractured pelvis and other injuries.

The car went into a skid as the driver, Mrs. Henry R. Yoder, tried to avoid hitting the pair. It then plunged into a deep drainage ditch, but Mrs. Yoder was unhurt.

On May 4, Chris W. Yoder, 39, was electrocuted as he and members of his family were preparing to reopen the California Drive-In on US-33 near College Avenue. the accident took place as he was trying to hook up a deep fryer to a 220-volt circuit.

Mr. Yoder was a member of the East Goshen Mennonite Church. the funeral was conducted May 7 at Yoder-Kulp Funeral Home, with Rev. Ray Keim and Rev. Vernon Schertz in charge.

Survivors include his widow, Sadie and three teenage sons of the home; two married daughters; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. C. Yoder of Bremen; six brothers and four sisters.
