— Word was received here last Saturday of the death of Abe Woelk, 70, of Newport, Wash. and a former resident of the Goessel community. Mr. and Mrs. Pete Woelk, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Woelk and Henry Woelk left Tuesday morning by train to attend funeral services for their brother.

ABRAHAM A. WOELK

Abraham A. Woelk, son of Abraham and Maria Buller Woelk, was born in South Russia Oct. 22, 1886. He came to America in April 1893 with his parents and two brothers and two sisters. They moved on a farm north of Lehigh, Kansas. He received most of his schooling in the Silberfeld school under G. A. Bartel.

In 1902 his parents moved onto a farm south of Goessel.

He was baptized upon confession of his faith in Christ and became a member of the Alexanderwohl church June 6, 1909.

He was married to Anna Goertz, daughter of Frank H. and Susie Hiebert Goertz, on Oct. 15, 1913, in the Tabor church near Goessel, Kansas. The officiating minister was Rev. P. H. Unruh. To this union were born two sons and six daughters.

Abraham raised his family on a farm one mile north of Goessel. Here he lived for 15 years. For two years he resided at Peabody, Kansas and then moved his family to Newport, Wash. on Oct. 14, 1937, settling in Spring Valley.

He transferred his membership from the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church to the Spring Valley Mennonite Church at Newport on Jan. 1, 1938. He was a faithful worker in the Lord's service and was cheerful and willing to help wherever help was needed. He taught a Sunday school class for a number of years and was a trustee and treasurer of the church.

He had been in failing health for some time. Our beloved father and husband passed away at the Newport Community Hospital, Newport, Wash. on March 2, 1957, at 7:30 p. m. at the age of 70 years, four months and eight days.

Our hope is in our Lord (I Thess. 4:13, 14.)

Those left behind are his wife Anna; two sons, Frank G. of Newport and Menno G. of St. John, Wash.; six daughters, Gertrude (Mrs. Henry Hopp) of Camas, Wash., Martha (Mrs. J. M. Glick) of Grand Coulee, Wash., Mary Anne (Mrs. D. C. Lockhart) of St. John, Wash., Sue of Spokane, Wash., Linda (Mrs. J. S. Henderson) of Lima, Peru, and Hulda (Mrs. Frank Holland) of Colfax, Wash.; 35 grandchildren (two preceded him in death); three sisters, Katie (Mrs. Jake Klassen) of Hesston, Kan., Justina (Mrs. George Klassen) of Ganada, Ariz., and Maria (Mrs. Jake Berg) of Hillsboro, Kan.; five brothers, Pete, Jake and Henry of Newton, Kan., John of Goessel, and Frank of Hillsboro; and a great number of other relatives and friends.
