WENDELL L. WILLKIE DIED LAST SUNDAY MORNING

Wendell L. Willkie, Republican presidential candidate n 1940, died unexpectedly in a New York hospital last Sunday morning of heart attack. Willkie, who toured the country in barn-storming fashion, polled the highest vote ever given a Republican presidential candidate but was nevertheless defeated by Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Later, as a special government emmissary [sic], Willkie circled the globe in an airplane and also had a widely publicized visit with Joseph Stalin of Russia.

Willkie's untimely death came at the age of 52.

THIRTY-FIVE THOUSAND ATTEND WILLKIE FUNERAL

FUNERAL services for Wendell L. Willkie, 1940 Republican presidential candidate, were held at the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian church in New york on October 10. The church was filled to capacity, while outside an overflow crowd of 35,000 had assembled.

Among those attending were Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Gov. and Mrs. Thomas E. Dewey, former President Herbert Hoover, Mayor F. H. La Guardia of New york and Bernard M. Baruch, New york, international banker and financeer [sic].
