text of obituary:
Berne, Ind.— Former Berne residents Luther and Rebecca Beitler and their 23-month-old granddaughter Sandy Williams died Aug. 27 in a mysterious fire in the Beitler trailer home at Davenport, Fla. Flammable fluid was reportedly involved, leading authorities to investigate the possibility of arson.
Florida police were searching for John P. Tingler, a former son-in-law of the Beitlers, who escaped from the trailer unhurt during the blaze. He disappeared, allegedly in a stolen vehicle, following preliminary police questioning. Tingler had been married to the Beitler’s daughter Devota, now divorced and living with her two children in Atlanta, Ga.
The dead granddaughter was the daughter of the late Mrs. Opal Williams, a victim of an unsolved March murder. There was no known connection between that death and the recent fire though authorities were exploring that angle.
The Beitlers, both natives of Berne, moved to Florida nine years ago and still have many relatives in the Berne-Geneva area.
