WILLIAM P. WIENS
William P. Wiens, son of Jacob and Margarethe Wiens, was born June 10, 1892, at Las Vegas, New Mexico, where his father was employed at that time. They moved to Newton the same year, where Bill (as he was commonly called) grew to manhood and made his home for the remainder of his life.
He was baptized May 15, 1910, and became a member of the First Mennonite church of which he was a faithful member until death. When a young man he took up construction work under the able supervision of his father. Along with his brothers, he became a proficient builder, taking much pride in his work. Although not soft spoken he was very tender hearted and made friends easily.
He was married to Marie Dick in June 1921 and two sons and one daughter came into this home. This happy home was broken when the mother passed away in June, 1934, and was buried on their 13th wedding anniversary. This loss was very hard for him for the next few years.
On July 23, 1937, he was married to Minna Harder and they shared many happy and dark days together.
Although never of robust health, he became ill about three years ago. Seemingly overcoming one illness, he was beset by another.
Never regaining full strength, but never giving up hope of full recovery, he was always hopeful of taking up work again. Two months ago when the severe pain finally became unbearable, he broke down completely. Since the passing of his brother John, who was very close to him in life, his health failed rapidly. He was called to be with the Lord on February 16 at 1:28 p.m. He is at rest, relieved of all suffering and earthly worries.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Minna; his sons, Mr. and Mrs. William Kenneth Wiens, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Wiens, both of Newton; one daughter, Mary Margaret, of the home; two grandchildren, Albert Kenneth and Prisca Marie; one brother, Edward of Newton; one sister, Mrs. A. D. Unruh of Hutchinson, and nieces and nephews, and many relatives and friends.
We are looking forward to a glorious reunion in heaven above.
