SUSANNA SCHARTNER WIENS

Susanna Shartnar [sic Schartner] Wiens, daughter of Friedrich and Elizabeth (Koehn) Schartner, was born near Marion, So. Dak. on Oct. 20, 1881, and departed from this life on Jan. 23, 1958, at 8:30 p. m. in her home in Marion.

She spent most of her life in the vicinity of Marion, where she also received a limited education in her girlhood days.

On May 18, 1905, she was united in marriage with our father, Abraham J. Wiens. To this union were born one son and two daughters. they shared the joys and sorrows of life for over 49 years. Her husband preceded her in death on Nov. 9, 1954.

She was a faithful and loving mother. The spiritual concern of her family and relatives was most important in her life. She prayed earnestly and faithfully for the salvation of lost souls and trusted the Lord for answered prayer. Her memory will always be cherished.

She accepted the Lord as her personal Saviour, and was baptized on April 11, 1897, by her father, Rev. Friedrich Schartner, and accepted into the membership of the Schartner church. After her marriage she joined the Bethesda Mennonite Church, where she remained a faithful member unto the end.

For many years of her life she suffered from arthritis which crippled her hands and feet, but she kept on doing her housework until June 20, 1952, when cerebral hemmorhage [sic] and arteriosclerosis brought a climax and she had to be cared for as an invalid for over five and one-half years. Loving care was given graciously and patiently, as best as loved ones knew how.

It pleased the Lord to call home our beloved mother at the age of 76 years, three months and three days. She is survived by her three children: John of Minneapolis, Tina of Sioux Fall [sic Sioux Falls] and Susie of Marion; two grandsons and two granddaughters, one son-in-law and one daughter-in-law, and also one great-grandchild; two brothers, Henry Schartner of Frazer, Mont. and Isaac Schartner of Marion, S. D.; two sisters, Mrs. Jacob M. Boese of Freeman, S. D. and Agneta Schartner of Marion, S. D.; two aunts, Mrs. Helena Unruh and Mrs. Jacob H Koehn of Freeman, S. D.

We sorrow not as those who have no hope, but we are looking forward to a blessed reunion.

Final services were held from the Tschetter funeral chapel on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 1:30 p.m. and 2:00 o'clock from the Bethesda Mennonite Church. Officiating clergymen were Rev. T. A. van der Smissen and Rev. H. P. Fast. Music was rendered by the Bethesda and Eldon Smith quartets. Organist was Mrs. Theo. Hofer. She was laid to rest in the Tieszen cemetery.
