MARIA FRIESEN

Jake Wiebe of Winnipeg passed away Oct. 15, following a series of strokes. He was born July 26, 1934 in Herbert, Sask. He became a Christian at an early age and joined Herbelt MB Church in his teens. He attended Herbert Bible School 1953-55. In the summer of 1954 he worked with MCC in a hospital for the mentally challenged in Portage la Prairie, Man. In summer, 1957 he married Iona Loewen. His love for children and grandchildren was seen in family times together. He relished hiking, backpacking and canoeing with his sons, but his greatest vacation joy was golf. He often took vacation at Canadian MB Conference convention time, combining his loves for family and church. He became a clerk for Saskatchewan Government Insurance, working his way up to manager of the Farm and Personal Property Division. After 24 years, he resigned to devote more time to church work. In 1980 he became business manager of Bethany Bible Institute, helping build and furnish the women's residence. From 1984 until his death he worked as a stewardship representative for the General and Canadian MB Conferences, helping people plan their financial futures. He was moderator of his church in Regina, leader of boys' brigade and treasurer of the Saskatchewan MB Conference for 13 years. He used his administrative gifts for Child Evangelism Fellowship for 30 years, serving as chair of both the Saskatchewan and Manitoba boards. He is remembered as a lover of people who helped in many practical ways, a willing servant and a hard worker who needed a challenge. He worked with a sense of optimism and was an encouragement to those around him. Predeceased by his parents and 1 infant brother, he is mourned by his wife Iona; sons Wendell, Calvin, Chester and Ivan; and 2 grandchildren. The funeral was Oct. 18 in Fort Garry MB Church, Winnipeg, with Dan Unrau ministering.
