● John H. Wiebe, 88, retired farmer of Whitewater, died Sunday at Bethel Deaconess Hospital. Services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Emmaus Mennonite Church, with Rev. L. R. Amstutz in charge. Mr. Wiebe leaves his widow, the former Martha Claassen, of the home; two sons, Howard of Hutchinson and Willard of Whitewater; two daughters, Mrs. Willard Friesen of Butterfield, Minn. and Mrs. Edgar Harder of Whitewater; 13 grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Ernest Claassen and Mrs. B. G. Harder, both of Whitewater.

JOHN H. WIEBE

John H. Wiebe, son of Henry H. and Marie Jantzen Wiebe, was born on a farm near Brainerd, Kan. on Jan. 19, 1887. His mother died when he was only five.

After the death of his mother he and his father made their home with an uncle, Cornelius Wiebe and family, and he felt warmly accepted in their home. He was a lad of 11 when his father married a widow, Mrs. Maria Janzen Epp. He spoke recently of the kindness his stepmother showed him.

He received his elementary training in the Brainerd school and in Whitewater. After that he attended German school and studied Bible under Rev. B. W. Harder.

He was baptized in 1904 and became a member of the Emmaus Mennonite Church. He served his church on the board of trustees for a term, acting as treasurer for one year.

On Dec. 16, 1920 he married Martha A. Claassen. They made their home on a farm southeast of Whitewater.

He was a lover of the soil and loved his chosen vocation, farming. He enjoyed nothing more than riding through the countryside to see the progress of the fields. He retired from active farming a little over 15 years ago and moved into Whitewater.

Around the first of this year his health began to fail. He entered the hospital on Feb. 17 where his illness was diagnosed as cancer. The Lord called him home on Mar. 23, 1975 at the age of 88.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife of Whitewater; four children, Helen, Mrs. Willard Friesen of Butterfield, Minn., Howard H. of Hutchinson, Kan., Agnes, Mrs. Edgar Harder of Whitewater, and Willard J. of Whitewater; 13 grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Ernest G. Claassen and Mrs. B. G. Harder, both of Whitewater.

Preceding him in death were 10 brothers and sisters and one son.

Funeral services were held at the Emmaus Mennonite Church on March 26, with Rev. L. R. Amstutz officiating.
