John G. Wiebe

John G. Wiebe was born in the village, Schardau, South Russia, July 6, 1855, and passed away at his home in Newton, Kans., May 21, 1926, at the age of 70 years, 10 months, and 15 days. In 1879, he united in marriage with Evelyne Schmidt, which union was blessed with ten children, two of whom died in infancy in Russia.

Mr. Wiebe and his family moved to America in 1892 and settled on a farm near Hillsboro, Kansas. Two years later, their son, aged fourteen, met with a fatal accident. A short time later, they moved to Newton remaining here for nine years, during which time Mr. Wiebe was employed in the Newton Mill. In 1895, the family united with the Mennonite Church on East First. In 1904, Mr. Wiebe, his wife and children went to Coy, Okla., near where they settled on a farm, staying there for 15 years. During these years, Mr. Wiebe was a faithful member and worker in the Bethany Mennonite Church at Coy.

Deciding to leave the farm, the family returned to Newton in 1919, and the home had been at 917 Logan ever since.

Mr. Wiebe had been suffering from heart trouble for a number of years, and on Sunday, May 16, he became seriously ill, and five days later, he passed away. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, four sons, David, John and Henry, all of Newton, and George of Aberdeen, Idaho, and three daughters, Mrs. P. B. Zielke and Mrs. A. J. Harms of Newton, and Mrs. J. D. Toevs of Aberdeen, Idaho.

Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite church Tuesday, May 25, at 2:30, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. J. E. Entz, assisted by the Rev. C. Frey and the Rev. A. Warkentin. --Kansan.
