Homer David Wenger was born Dec. 10, 1886, in Rockingham County, near Edom, Va., and departed this life on Jan. 29, 1967, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, at the age of 80 years, one month, and 19 days, having entered the hospital on Jan. 8.

He was the son of Jacob C. and Susanna Virginia Suter Wenger, the fifth child in a family of 15.

As a young man he came to Iowa. On Dec. 8, 1914, was married to Velma E. Cook at South English, Iowa, where they lived on a farm (except for two years) until 1939 when they moved to Wellman and operated a hatchery until retirement in 1953.

In his youth he became a Christian and united with the Mennonite Church. He was a member at the Liberty congregation near South English. He was a devoted worker in the church, being treasurer for almost 50 years.

He is survived by two sons, Harry J. of Wellman, Iowa, and Wayne J. of Leburn, Ky.; one daughter, Mrs. Paul A. (Wilma) Friesen of Hesston, Kan.; 13 grandchildren and one foster grandchild; three brothers, Luther, Perry G. and John R., all of Linville, Va.; and eight sisters, Misses Mary, Florence, and Katie Wenger, all of Linville, Va., Mrs. Perry (Anna) Martin, Mrs. Henry (Sallie) Weaver, Mrs. Moffit (Lillie) Faught, and Mrs. Lucy Shenk, all of Harrisonburg, Va., and Mrs. Ray (Clara) Shenk of Elkridge, Md.

He was preceded in death by his wife in November 1959, his parents, one brother, and two sisters.

He had a deep concern for his family and the welfare of the church and the community.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 1, 1967, at the Wellman Mennonite Church with Rev. Gideon G. Yoder, Rev. John Y. Swartzendruber, and Rev. George S. Miller officiating. Burial was at the Brethren Cemetery near South English, Iowa.

HOMER D. WENGER
