ALTA MAE WENGER
Alta Mae Wenger, nee Schertz, daughter of David M. and Mary Schertz, was born on Sept. 6, 1889 near Newton, Kan. She grew up in that vicinity. At an early age she gave her heart to the Lord and united with the Mennonite church near Hesston, Kan. In 1909 she attended Hesston Academy, where she was the first student to enroll.
On Aug. 10, 1913 she was married to Daniel A. Wenger of Canton, Kan., where they resided until August 1943. At that time they moved to Cares, Calif., where she spent the last 26 years until the Lord called her home on Dec. 5, 1969 at the age of 80 years, two months and 29 days. Her husband preceded her in death on March 18, 1969.
This union was blessed with six children, all of whom survive: David E of Phoenix, Ariz., Mary, Mrs. Clarence Guengerich of South Gate, Calif., Ruth, Mrs. Burl Hampton of Ceres, Calif., Lois, Mrs. Robert Ferre of Campbell, Calif., Homer E. of Anchorage, Alaska, and Betty, Mrs. Donald Larson of Cape Coral, Fla. Also surviving are two sisters and one brother, Mrs. L. Ellen Mitchell of Turlock, Calif., Mrs. Anna Unholtz and Jess E. Schertz, both of Newton; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
For approximately the last four years she was an invalid. As the result of a heart attack and several strokes which left her almost helpless, during the last nine months she lived in a rest home. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. We know our loss is her gain. — The Family.
