Mechanic Dies of Gas Poisoning While Working in Garage

Goshen, Ind. — Funeral services for Virgil LaMar Welty, 58, of Dunlap were held Jan. 11 at the Syracuse Mennonite Church. Rev. Claire Schumm officiated, assisted by Lester Bauman.

Mr. Welty died at the home in Dunlap the evening of Jan. 8. His body was found in the garage by his wife, who went to investigate after he failed to come into the house. A mechanic employed by an Elkhart auto dealer, he had been working on a friend's car during the evening. The county coroner ruled that death was due to probable accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. He also suffered from a heart ailment.

Mr. Welty was a member of Sunnyside Mennonite Church, Dunlap.

Surviving in addition to his wife, the former Edwith Oswald, are three sons, Larry E. of Goshen, Lavon J. of Akron, Pa., and Merritt L. of Hesston, Kan.; a daughter, Ellen Ruth, of the home; four grandchildren; three brothers, Ray of Goshen, Nelson of Foraker, and Everett of Syracuse; and a sister, Viola, of Nappanee.
