Martin D. Welty

Martin D. Welty, 67, who suffered a gastric hemorrhage Thursday morning while in his automobile, ready to start for Florida, died at Goshen Ind., hospital at 5 a. m., Sept. 26.

He, his wife and their son, Donald L., were making last-minute preparations for their trip. Mr. Welty had been in poor health for several months but his condition was not regarded as serious.

Born southwest of Wakarusa March 2, 1879, Mr. Welty was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Welty. He moved to Goshen nine years ago from Elkhart, where he had resided many years. He was last employed as the star route mail carrier out of the Goshen post office, retiring last December because of declining health. He was a member of the Mennonite church.

Surviving are the widow, the former Mary E. Welty, to whom he was married in 1904; the son, Donald L.; the following brothers — Ira of Bunker Hill, Ind., Homer and Amos, both of near Nappanee, and George, Jacob I., Rev. Silas and Elmer, all of near Wakarusa, and a sister, Mrs. Alvin Yoder of near Nappanee.

The body lay in state at the Elkhart Prairie Street Mennonite church from 12:30 to 2 p. m. Monday, Sept. 30, when funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Paul Liminger of Goshen. Burial was in Prairie Street cemetery.
