Driver of Produce Truck Fatally Hurt In Michigan Crash

Goshen, Ind. — Robert J. Weldy, 48, of rural Milford was killed Thursday when a freight liner truck he was driving rolled over near Benton Harbor, Mich. The truck was loaded with almost 6,000 chickens.

Mr. Weldy, an employee of Middlebury Produce Inc., apparently made a turn on an exit ramp and braked his truck for a sharp curve. The truck reportedly killed out of control for 115 feet and rolled over. Allen J. Cross of rural Middlebury, who was in the truck's sleeper, suffered only minor injuries and shock. Half of the chickens were killed.

Funeral services for Mr. Weldy were held Aug. 17 at the North main Street Mennonite Church in Nappanee, where he was a member. Rev. Homer F North and Rev. Norman Lyndaker officiated.

Surviving are his widow, the former Zoa Hooley, five children and four grandchildren.
