ISRAEL MOURNS DEATH OF FIRST PRESIDENT

Dr. Chaim Weizmann, who became the first president of the newly established Israel, died at his home in Rehovoth Sunday, Nov 9.

The 77 year old Zionist leader came into prominence during World War I, when as a chemist, he discovered a new and more powerful explosive which greatly helped the British in prosecuting the war. Instead of accepting a big reward from the British government, Weizmann asked for Britain's help in re-establishing a homeland for the Jews in Palestine. He lived to see his dream come true in 1948, when his people were brought together again as a nation for the first time in 2,000 years.

Weizmann was a Russian Jew, born near Pinsk, Nov. 27, 1874.
