— Herman S. Wedel, 84, retired farmer of rural Burns, died last Sunday at Bethel Deaconess Hospital. A native of the Moundridge community, he had lived near Burns since 1937. He was a member of the Zion Mennonite Church at Elbing, where the funeral was conducted Wednesday afternoon. Rev. Harold Graber, the pastor, officiated. Mr. Wedel is survived by his widow, the former Christian Voran; four daughters, Mrs. Wm. Regier and Mrs. Ronald Andres of Elbing, Eleanor of the home, and Mrs. Arnold Entz of rural Newton; five sons, Stanley of Elbing, Howard of Peabody, Wilmer and Clarence of Burns, and Kenneth of Moundridge; five sisters, Mrs. Anna Gering of Anthony, Mrs. Ernest Buller of Newton, Misses Katherine Wedel of McPherson and Mary and Esther Wedel of Moundridge; two brothers, Rev. P. P. Wedel of Moundridge and Alfred of McPherson; 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Herman S. Wedel, son of John H. and Marie Goering Wedel, was born in Moundridge, Kan. on May 25, 1887. He attended the local schools and grew to manhood in the Moundridge community.

At the age of 16 he was baptized and received into the First Mennonite Church of Christian, where he took an active interest, serving as a member of the board of deacons 14 years and for many years as a Sunday school teacher.

On April 13, 1913 he was married to Christina Voran. They were privileged to share the joys and sorrows of a happy home for over 58 years.

Following marriage he farmed in the Moundridge community until 1937, when he with his family moved to the Burns community where he also farmed until his retirement in 1959. He loved to work with the soil and had an interest in all plant life.

In 1946, he transferred his membership to the Zion Mennonite Church in Elbing, where he served as deacon for three years and a number of years as Sunday school teacher. He remained a member of this church until his death. Throughout his life He was faithful in church attendance as long as health permitted.

His interest in education was evidenced by the fact that he served 18 years as a member of the school board. He also served in various other capacities in the community. His family will remember him as a loving, self-giving father. His interest in others and sense of humor endeared him to all who knew him.

He departed this life after a lengthy illness early Sunday morning, Aug. 22, at the Bethel Deaconess Hospital, at the age of 84 years, two months and 27 days. He leaves his widow, Christina, and the following children: Stanley and wife Edith, Elisabeth and husband William Regier, Ruth and husband Ronald Andres, Jane and husband Arnold Entz, all of rural Newton, Howard of rural Peabody, Wilmer and wife Martha, Clarence and wife Thelma, all of rural Burns, Kenneth and wife Mae of Moundridge, and Eleanor of the home; 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

One daughter, Verna, one grandson Dwight Andres, and one daughter-in-law, Louise, preceded him in death.

He also leaves two brothers, Rev. P. P. Wedel of Moundridge and Alfred Wedel of McPherson; five sisters, Mrs. Anna Gering of Anthony, Mrs. Martha Buller of Newton, Katherine Wedel of McPherson, Mary and Esther Wedel of Moundridge, and many other relatives and friends.
