MRS. BEN J. WEDEL

Mrs. Ben J. Wedel was born in Lane County, Oregon, not far from Eugene, on Oct. 19, 1890. She was the oldest of the John J. Waltner family. The Waltners lived in Oregon until 1900 when, along with a whole Mennonite colony, they moved to the Big Bend Country in eastern Washington, settling in the Menno District west of Ritzville.

In 1910 our father, the late Ben J. Wedel, made a trip to Ritzville and the Menno District from Upland, Calif. While visiting there he met Rose Waltner. On Nov. 10, 1910, father and mother along with Mr. and Mrs. Joe G. Schrag were married at the Menno Mennonite church by Rev. Jacob R. Schrag.

After the wedding father and mother left by train for Upland, Calif. to make their home. In August 1912 a son, Clayton, was born. In the summer of 1913 they moved to the Alta Vista District near Porterville in Tuldre county, Calif. In November 1913 a daughter, Dorothy, was born. The family lived in the Porterville area till January 1919, when they moved to Woodlake, Calif. In August 1922 another son was born. He was named for his grandfather, Jacob Peter Wedel. In the summer of 1932 the family moved to Strathmore, Calif. In 1935 they located near Lindsay, Calif. and finally in Lindsay, in 1944.

On Jan. 3, 1950 our father passed away. After his death, mother still carried on, though we could see that she was failing in health and could not live alone anymore.

In August 1957 mother and her son Clayton took a train trip to Oregon and Washington so that the Waltner family could all be together for the last time in this life.

On July 18, 1958, mother's second oldest sister, Mrs. Leon Gering, passed away. Four days later mother fell and injured her left shoulder. From July 22 till August 2 she was in the Lindsay hospital. Then she was moved to the Porterville convalescent hospital, where she stayed until her death on Dec. 13, 1959.

Surviving are two sons and a daughter, Clayton Wedel of Lindsay, J. Pete Wedel of Visalia, Calif., and Mrs. Arthur Nelson (Dorothy) of Lanett, Alabama; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Carl Waltner of Dallas, Oregon and Walter Waltner of Ritzville, Wash.; three sisters, Mrs. Henry Dyck (Ella Waltner), Mrs. Ralph Gering (Hilda Waltner) and Mrs. Joe Janz (Lillian Waltner); two nieces and three nephews.

Father and mother were both good Christian parents.

The funeral took place at the Webb Funeral parlor on Dec. 1?. Rev. Herman Grams, pastor of the Lindsay Assembly of God church, officiated. Burial was made in the Olive cemetery at the side of her husband. — The Children.

GRANDMA entry #298245 gives her husband's name as Benjamin Peter Wedel, not Benjamin J.
