text of obituary:
Irene Ruth Wedel, daughter of Edwin A. and Frances Wedel, was born at Moundridge, Kansas, on April 1, 1919. Here she spent her brief life in the parental home, and the parents found much joy in the growth and development of their daughter. She attended the Moundridge schools and this year was a junior in the high school. She is the second member of her class to be claimed by death during this school year. She was ambitious, diligent in her studies and did good work in her classes.
She was also interested in spiritual things, attending Sunday School and church services. When in the fall of 1934 a class in catechetical instruction was organized, she became a member of this class. On June 9, 1935, Irene was baptized and accepted as a member into the First Mennonite Church of Christian at Moundridge, Kansas.
As a result of a goiter she was obliged to give up her studies early in the fall and enter the Halstead Hospital. spending eight weeks there, she was permitted to go home. But on February 4, she became very sick again and entered the Hospital. Here she passed away in the morning of February 6, 1936, at the age of 16 years, 10 months and 5 days. her deeply bereaved parents, three sisters, one brother and many other relatives and friends mourn her early departure.
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Also there is comfort in the words of the song that she requested to be sung at her funeral:
"Safe in the arms of Jesus
Safe on His gentle breast.
There by His love o'ershaded,
Sweetly my soul shall rest."
