Former Chief Justice Dies at Age 83
The nation paused last week in tribute to Former Chief Justice Earl Warren, 83, who died July 9 at Georgetown, Va., a little more than five years after his retirement from the Supreme Court.
In the memorial services held Friday afternoon in the National Cathedral in Washington, Warren was eulogized as "the real hero who dared transform an American mythology into an American reality."
Recalled were the high court decisions under his leadership which struck down segregated schools, required states to apply the "one man-one vote" formula, and expanded the legal rights of criminal defendants.
During Warren's 16 years as Chief Justice, the court consistently broadened the application of the Bill of Rights — a trend which produced criticism from those holding to a more literal interpretation of the Constitution.
