— Henry Warkentine, 83, long-time resident of the Peabody community, died Monday at St. Luke's Hospital in Marion. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Zion Mennonite Church, Elbing. He leaves his widow, Katie, of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Dean Warhurst of Newton; three sons, Marvin of Burns, Ed of Lawrence, and David of Newton; 17 grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. Helena Janzen of Medford, Okla., Mrs. Susie Graves of Hillsboro, and Mrs. Elizabeth Schmidt of Newton.

HENRY WARKENTINE

Henry Warkentine was born August 5, 1874, in Elkhart, Ind., a son of Peter and Justina Wiens Warkentine. He departed this life at St. Luke Hospital in Marion, Kansas on April 21, 1958, at the age of 83 years, eight months, 16 days.

During the early years of his life his family moved to Kansas. On May 29, 1898, he was baptized by Rev. Peter Balzer and joined the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church near Goessel.

On Oct. 1, 1922, he was united in marriage to Katie Schmidt. Five children were born to this union: Marvin, Ed, David, Rozella [sic Rosella] and Benny, who died at birth. The family lived in the Goessel community, then later moved to a farm near Elbing. Here he became a member of the Zion Mennonite church. In 1937 the family moved to Peabody to make their home at 903 North Olive Street.

On Oct. 1, 1947, Mr. and Mrs. Warkentine observed their 25th wedding anniversary in the Zion Church. This was a joyous occasion which he often liked to recall. He was faithful in attending church as long as his health permitted.

He had been in failing health a number of years. In January 1957 his condition became such that he could no longer be cared for at home and he was taken to Cedar Rest Home near Marion. He was always cheerful and never complained. He enjoyed his friends and was proud of his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Katie; his children, Marvin and wife Thelma of Burns, Ed and wife Velma of Lawrence, David and wife Barbara of Newton, and Rozella [sic Rosella] and husband Dean Warhurst of Newton; 17 grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Schmidt, Mrs. Susie Graves, and Mrs. Helena Jantzen. His parents, three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. He also leaves many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held April 23 at the Zion Church in Elbing with Rev. H. J.Dyck and Rev. Waldo W. Kaufman officiating.
