FORMER SUPERINTENDENT OF MT. LAKE HOSPITAL DIES AT SALEM, OREGON

Mt. Lake, Minn. — Word was received here of the death of Mrs. John R. Warkentin, the former Marie Toews, R. N., of Mt. Lake, which occurred May 27 at Salem, Ore. She was 66.

Mrs. Warkentin was a native of this community and was formerly superintendent of the Bethel Hospital here. Her marriage to Rev. John R. Warkentin took place seven years ago. Death was due to cancer.

MRS. J. R. WARKENTIN

I, Mrs. Marie Warkentin, daughter of Jacob F. and Helena Lohrenz Toews, was born in Cottonwood County, Minn., on a farm five miles north of Mountain Lake, on May 23, 1899.

While attending the parochial Bible school I was made aware of the need of a Saviour. During revival meetings conducted by Rev. Gottshall I made a definite commitment for Christ my Lord and Saviour. On Pentecost Sunday, May 23, 1914, I was baptized by Rev. Rev. H. H. Regier and received into the fellowship of the Bethel Church of Mountain Lake.

In 1926 I graduated from a nurses training course in Bethel Deaconess Hospital, Newton, Kan. I chose this work for my life's vocation. In this work I have been active for more than 32 years. I served as nurse, anesthetist, x-ray technician, and as superintendent of Bethel Hospital in Mountain Lake for a period of ten years. I also gave a year of Voluntary Service in nursing at Brooklane Farm, Hagerstown, Md.

Our class graduating motto, “Serving God by serving others,” has been the constant purpose of my life.

On April 8, 1958 I married J. R. Warkentin and made my home with him in Dallas, Ore. In the same year, on Oct. 5, i joined the Grace Mennonite Church in Dallas.

When she married she at once had a large family of children and grandchildren. She loved them all and gave freely of herself to be their mother and friend.

She was much interested in Christian work. She was leader of many church and mission activities and organizations.

On Dec. 1, 1960 she discovered a small growth on her body which the doctor pronounced malignant. She had to undergo two major surgeries and numerous deep x-ray treatments. Her sufferings were severe and long until the Heavenly Father mercifully called her into the Beyond on Thursday morning, May 27, 1965. She reached the age of 66 years and three days.

She is survived by her husband; her mother, Mrs. Helena Toews; two sisters, Helen (Mrs. Jacob L. Friesen) and Elizabeth (Mrs. John S. Friesen), and a brother Jacob J., all of Mountain Lake; and Gerhard and Rudolph Toews of Salem, Ore. She was preceded in death by her father and two brothers, Frank and Nikolai. She also leaves six step-sons, Delmer, John and Melvin of Dallas, Henry of Rock Island, Ill.; Jake of Linn Grove, Iowa, and Albert of Eugene, Ore.; and a step-daughter, Mrs. Lola Schmidt of Dallas.

We who remain think of Marie as one of us that has gone before to dwell in the mansions Christ has prepared for His own (John 4:1-3).
