MRS. MARIA WARKENTIN

(Mrs.) Maria Warkentin of St. Catharines, Ont. passed away on February 26. She was born to David and Gertrude (nee Deleskie) Hooge on February 12, 1887 in Friedensruh, Molotschna, Russia. She spent her childhood and youth there and also attended elementary school there. In 1907 she married John J. Warkentin. The couple took up grain farming in Spat, in the Crimea. Of the five children born to them, two died in infancy. During the great spiritual awakening in 1919, Maria and her husband accepted the Lord as Saviour, and joined the Mennonite Brethren Church at Spat. The Warkentins were among those who stood "before the gates of Moscow" in 1929. They reached Germany, and arrived in Waterloo, Ont. in 1930. There they joined the Kitchener Mennonite Brethren Church. She entered the Tabor Manor, St. Catharines in 1975.

Mrs. Warkentin was predeceased by her husband John in 1967, and by her daughter Mary in 1967. She is survived by one son, John and wife Lisbeth; one daughter Helena and husband Herbert Cress; six grandchild ren and ten great-grandchildren. The funeral service took place on March 1 in the Kitchener Church, with pastor John F. Froese conducting the service, assisted by Dietrich Klassen and Isaac Toews.
