HER DEATH WAS SUDDEN

Apoplexy Ends Life of an Old Resident at Peabody Home of Daughter.

Caroline Stephan was born in Germany Sept. 12, 1847, came to Summerfield, Ill., in 1873 and was married to George Hahn, to which union five children were born, who are August Hahn of Halstead, Jacob Hahn of St. Louis, Mo., and Mrs. Zettie Lewellen of Peabody, Kans. Two sons died in infancy and the husband was accidently killed in the early 80's.

Several years later she was married to Peter Warkentin and the children born to this union are Mrs. Anna Marak of Halstead, Mrs. Lena Hogue of Sylvia, Kans., and Mrs. Mary Culp of Blanca, Col. One son and one daughter died in early childhood.

Early in life she united with the Lutheran Church but there being no Church of that denomination in this city, she joined the German M. E. Since coming to Halstead with her family in 1875, she made this her home until eight years ago when she went to live with her children. At the time of her death she was living with Mrs. Lewellen in Peabody.

She retired Friday evening with her usual good health but suffered a stroke of apoplexy during the night and died Sunday morning at 8:30 o'clock, aged 71 years, 9 months and 17 days. Besides her children she is survived by two step-children, Mrs. Kate Snepf of St. Louis and George Hahn of Newton, and twenty-one grand-children.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the Cheatum Untertaking Parlors with Rev. C. Herrmann, her former Pastor in charge, assisted by Rev. John Buthman of Trinity Methodist Church. The Chapel was well filled with old friends of the deceased and of the family and at the conclusion of the service the remains were conveyed to the City Cemetery for interment.
