CAROLINE MUELLER WALTNER
Caroline Mueller Waltner was born in Turner County, S. D., Dec. 12, 1874, to Rev. Christian Mueller and Anna Schrag Mueller. She attended several years of rural grade school, was baptized and joined the Salem-Zion Mennonite church. Later membership was transferred to the Salem congregation.
On Nov. 2, 1892, she married Joseph J. N. Waltner. Together they experienced pioneer life on a Turner County farm. They lived together nearly 55 years. Six children were born to them. About 24 years ago they retired from the farm and made their home at Freeman. Mr. Waltner died in 1947.
She enjoyed poetry, psalms, and German gospel songs, which she memorized. She attended church services regularly when health permitted.
During the last year her health declined rather rapidly, but she did not become fully bedfast until a few days before the end. On Sept. 23, she passed away quietly at Freeman hospital, reaching the age of 85 years, nine months and 11 days.
Preceding her in death were an infant son, one daughter, one brother and four sisters. Surviving are one sister Marie and husband John P. M. Waltner of Freeman, Herbert Waltner and wife Esther of Hurley, Otillia and husband Peter C. Albrecht of Freeman, Ralph Waltner and wife Verda of Hurley; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held Sept. 26 at the Salem Mennonite church, Freeman, and burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
