— The marital tangle of an out-of-town couple, involving the custody of two small children, ended in a tragedy at a Newton filling station Wednesday evening, Oct. 20, when James Walker, 44 of Omaha, Neb. shot and killed his wife, Beverly, 22, and then fatally wounded himself after a gun battle with local police officers. He died the same night at Bethel Deaconess hospital. Earlier in the day in a Wichita court, the father had been denied custody of two sons, said to be in Virginia. The mother had been living temporarily in Wichita.
