SUSIE F. VOTH

Susie F. Voth was born in the village of Lichtenau, South Russia, on July 2, 1888 to Henry and Katharina (Enns) Bergen.

In 1902 mother and her brother John came to North America leaving behind their parents and other family members. Their father and several of the brothers and sisters immigrated to Kansas later. Upon mother's arrival in Marion County, Kansas she made her home with her cousins, Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Neuman, who, having no children of their own, adopted her as their own daughter.

She attended six months of English school in the Sand Creek school, having learned only the German and Russian languages previously. She continued to teach herself and thus learned to write as well as speak the English fluently.

On May 19, 1907, she was baptized upon the confession of her faith in Jesus Christ by Rev. Peter Balzer, and received into the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church. When the Tabor Church was organized in 1908, she became a charter member there.

On April 30, 1914, she was married to Jacob F. Voth, and they continued to live on the Neuman farm until their retirement. Albert and Ella (twins) came to bless their home on Sept. 16, 1918, but both passed away in infancy. Later a son and daughter were born to them.

Father and Mother were both active in church, school, and community affairs. Father died on Sept. 15, 1962. Mother then made her home with her daughter and family.

She had been in declining health since November 1966 when she fell and fractured her hip. She suffered a severe stroke two days before her death on march 9, 1967.

Left to cherish her memory are her son Arthur of Akron, Pa. and daughter Helen, Mrs. Raymond Schmidt of Route 2, Newton, and their companions; five grandchildren; her foster mother, Mrs. Adolf Schmidt of Goessel; two sisters, Mrs. Katherina Dick of Lynden, Wash. and Mrs. Maria Giesbrecht of Winkler, Man.

Funeral services were conducted on March 12 in the Tabor Mennonite Church by Rev. James Waltner.
