Evelyn Susie Voth was born March 6, 1919, at Goessel, Kan., to Peter S. and Anna (Fast) Voth. She had a happy childhood and enjoyed picking wildflowers and fishing.

She took catechism under P. H. Unruh. She was baptized May 31, 1936, and became a member of Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church near Goessel.

She attended Gordon Grade School and graduated from Goessel High School in 1938. She graduated from Bethel College, North Newton, in 1953. She earned her master's degree from Emporia State Teachers College in 1962.

She taught school 41 years. Her teaching career followed this path: six years in rural schools in the Goessel area—Maple Hill, Emmenthal and South Bloomfield; seven years, fourth grade, Hillsboro Elementary School; two years, fifth grade, Newton; 15 years, third grade, Hutchinson; 11 years, fourth grade, Goessel Grade School. She loved her students and was considered an excellent teacher.

She had a deep appreciation for music and was church organist for 46 years, from 1942 to 1988. She played the organ or vibraharp for more than 200 weddings. She directed handbell choirs from 1965 to 1988 and also enjoyed singing in the choir.

She also taught Sunday school for 29 1/2 years and served on various church committees.

She enjoyed gardening and cultivating flowers.

She suffered from bouts with cancer, beginning in 1972. She died in Newton on July 13, 1990, in the presence of her family.

She is survived by a sister, Hilda Buller; two brothers, Rudolf Voth and Elmer and his wife, Josephine Voth; and 11 nieces and nephews.

Services were held July 17, 1990, at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church, with Dennis Schmidt, Milton J. Harder and Aaron J. Epp officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

EVELYN SUSIE VOTH
