CORNELIUS VOTH, JR.

Cornelius Voth, Jr., was born to Cornelius and Katharina Voth on Nov. 22, 1895, near Goessel, Kan., where he lived until he entered the Bethesda Home in January 1974 and was taken home to be with his Savior on July 1, 1985.

He attended Gordon School and graduated from the preparatory school in Goessel. Upon confession of faith he was baptized by Heinrich Banman and joined the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church on May 31, 1914.

During World War I, he was called to Ft. Riley, where he took a stand as a conscientious objector. While waiting for the CO's promised farm furlough, he and others were court-martialed and sentenced to 25 years imprisonment in the disciplinary barracks of Ft. Leavenworth, Kan. After 10 weeks in prison, he was released.

He then continued his education at Bethel College, North Newton, Kan., and graduated from Friends University, Wichita. He taught school for eight years in several high schools in Montana and North Dakota.

He was an active church member. He enjoyed farming until he became ill with a heart condition and hardening of the arteries. Because of poor circulation, his feet were frozen and had to be amputated, but with the aid of boots he could walk quite well until later years.

He was much interested in the family genealogy with which he labored until a short time before his death.

He is survived by one sister, Lena Voth, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Katy M. Schmidt, and five brothers, Henry, Peter, William, Abraham and Albert.
