ROBERT VERNON VOGT
Robert Vernon Vogt, the son of Sam F. and Justine Leppke Vogt, was born on Sept. 22, 1829 [sic 1929] in Hillsboro, Kan. Here he spent his childhood days, attended school, was graduated from the Hillsboro High School and also attended Tabor College for a short time.
As a young boy, he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour during a revival campaign. He was baptized upon his confession of faith by Rev. J. W. Vogt and united with the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church.
On Dec. 3, 1950, he was united with Velma Kroeker in holy matrimony at Enid, Okla. This union, which lasted only 13 years, seven months and one day, was blessed with two children, a son and a daughter. We settled in Enid. After about a year he entered the air force, where he served four years. In 1956 we moved to Reedley, Calif. He was soon transferred to Woodland, Calif. where we united with the Baptist Church. From Woodland, he was transferred to Sacramento, and then we made our home in Redding.
As early as 1959 we detected the dreaded disease that had laid hold of his body. However, the Lord answered prayer, and he was restored so that he could go back to work. In 1963, malignancy again appeared, and this time he did not recover. Though he had been saved as a boy, in 1960 he surrendered his life to the Lord and was completely at rest. On July 4, about 10:30 p.m., the Lord called him home to glory. He reached the age of 34 years, nine months and 12 days.
Those who mourn his departure are his widow, Velma, now of Reedley; one son, Robert, age 9; one daughter, Janice, age 7; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Vogt of Reedley; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Jane Edwards and Mrs. Ellen Mae Janzen, both of Reedley; his parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kroeker of San Jose; six sisters-in-law; six brothers-in-law; his grandparents by marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Goertzen of Henderson, Neb., and many other relatives and friends.
The memorial service was held in the Mennonite Brethren Church, Reedley, Calif., with Rev. Dan Friesen and Rev. Leo Schlegel, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Redding, Calif., officiating. — The Family.
