CHRIS A. VERCLER

Chris A. Vercler, 70, prominent Washington, Ill., farmer, died suddenly Thursday, Dec. 26, in San Francisco, Calif., where he was on a tour. He had been ill one day.

He was born Nov. 12, 1876, at Meadows, a son of the Rev. Andrew and Phoebe Lehman Vercler. He was married to Susan Wagner at Washinton [sic Washington] in 1900. Mrs. Vercler died in September, 1929.

He is survived by four sons: Lloyd, Eureka; Ralph, and Wayne, Washington; and Harold, a relief worker in Paraguay, South America. The latter had expected to attend the funeral. There is one sister, Mrs. Peter Sommer of Lexington.

He was a member of Calvary Mennonite church, and served as treasurer of the high school board of education for many years. He was a member of the executive board of the Mennonite Old People’s home at Meadows, the Mennonite conference mission board, and the executive board of the Washington Farmers Co-Operative Grain and Elevator company. He was active in the work of the Tazewell county Farm Bureau and the Agricultural Administration.

The body arrived at the Habecker funeral home Saturday and was taken to the Vercler home, where services were held at 1:00 p. m. Tuesday and at 1:30 p. m. at Calvary Mennonite church. The Rev. Ben Esch and the Rev. George I. Gundy officiated. Burial was in Glen Dale cemetery at Washington.
